A 1932 Packard 903 Coupe Roadster at the Portland Auto Exhibition
There are so many [?tag=surf ‘n turf] fun, fantastic things to do in Portland that it’s tempting to spend an entire Oregon vacation in the city alone. One of my favorite things about the funky city is that a traveler (even a Portlandian, I suppose) can wander around and fill up the day with serendipitous discoveries and attractions. ?tag=surf ‘n turf case in point: the ?tag=surf ‘n turf allure of the automobile, sponsored by the portland art museum. One weekend morning, my spouse and I left our hotel to meet some friends and spend the day touring wineries in Willamette Valley — but what is this? We were immediately distracted by fancy-schmancy old and antique cars lining the street. In the summer in Portland, car collectors donate their time and park their rare automobiles outdoors to help promote the Allure of the Automobile at the Portland Art Museum. While there were over a dozen old Porsches on display (and other assorted antique cars), our favorite was the Packard pictured above. This is a 1932 Packard 903 Roadster, in great condition. There are only 10 Packard 1932 Roadsters left in existence, and it was thrilling for my antique car-loving husband to see it. Take a look at this beauty; you don’t need to be a car buff to appreciate the elegance and rarity of the Packard Roadster. The side view shows that this model was designed with the upscale driver in mind; that’s a built-in golf club door. The owner of the rare antique Packard was kind enough to leave a display set of old-school golf clubs for further admiration from the (mostly male) passers-by. Travel to Portland, Oregon ?tag=surf ‘n turf, and you’ll never know exactly what will happen. The joyous serendipity of stumbling across this outdoor car show fit right in with the personality of Portland. Finding attractions and low-key events like this is one of the reasons Portland is a great place to return to, again and again. 10 Oct 2011
